The company was founded by Bob Lubin, Fred Farrar Sr., and Paul Burton in 1980 with the opening of its first location at an Austin mall. The first franchised location opened in 1981, but the idea never took off until 1988 when Lubin teamed up with Tim Taft to create what would become one of the most popular hamburger chains today. As of 2016, there are over 125 Fuddruckers locations across America
